Louisville receives first-ever MAC Field Hockey Player of the Week Award...
Kerri Beckhorn led the University of Louisville field hockey team to its best start since the 1992 season. Beckhorn has scored one goal in every contest for Louisville this season, including the game-winner over #5 Iowa last week. This week she scored Louisville's lone goal against #11 Connecticut in a 2-1 overtime loss and scored the first goal against Providence in a 3-2 overtime victory for the Cardinals. The sophomore forward is currently leading the conference in goals and points scored.
Kristen Johnson (Kent State, F, So., Falls Church, Va.)
Had two goals over the weekend as Kent State split with Maine and Boston College. She leads Kent State with three goals.
Katie Coccia (Central Michigan, MF, Fr., Rochester, NY)
Scored one goal and had one assist in her first collegiate game against Southwest Missouri State.
MAC FIELD HOCKEY NOTES
Of the eighteen matches already completed by Mid-American Conference schools, half have been played against opponents ranked in the top 25 of last year's final STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. MAC schools were 3-6 in those matches.
Ball State opens its 2000 home schedule with perennial nationaal powers Massachusetts (finished 9th in last season's poll) and James Madison (finished 15th in last season's poll).
Janel Spero recorded her second career shutout in a 3-0 victory against Southwest Missouri State ... Katie Coccia and Krystal Yee each scored a goal in their first collegiate games (against Southwest Missouri State).
Goalkeeper Christy Hershey was named to the IKON Husky Classic All-Tournament Team, while Louisville finished second at the tournament ... Louisville has gone into overtime in three of its first four games, with all four games decided by one goal.
Kent State's 4-2 victory over Maine was Kerry DeVries' 50th victory as head coach of the Golden Flashes, becoming Kent State's fastest field hockey coach to 50 wins ... Kent State has lost two games in overtime, both game-winners were penalty strokes.
Miami has played three matches, with all three ending in a score of 2-1, including a double-overtime loss to Cal-Berkeley ... The RedHawks finish up their West Coast trip at Stanford on Tuesday, September 5.
The Bobcats were off last week, but will be back in action next weekend at Michigan State and Michigan. Last season the Bobcats lost to Michigan 3-2 and took Michigan State into overtime, losing 3-2.
