Eastern Michigan - Sarah Conger Took first place in the 50 and 100 freestyle events against Oakland
on Jan. 29 and Cleveland State and Akron on Jan. 30, with times of 24.44 and 24.26 in the 50 and 53.16
and 52.86 in the 100. Against Oakland, swam a leg on the winning 400 medley relay, while posting a
winning and season-best time of 1:54.0 in the 200 free.
Ohio - Kim Van Selm Set a pool record in the 200 free (1:52.02) and the 500 free (4:55.84) in a dual
meet win over Ohio. Also, placed first in the 50 free (24.19) and was a member of the first-place 400 free
relay team (3:34.06).
Other Notable Performances
Bowling Green - Nancy Simpson Anchored the 200 medley relay (1:55.13), which captured first place
in a dual meet against Valparaiso. In addition, finished second in the 50 free (25.94). Against Miami,
placed first in the 200 medley, 100 back (58.72) and 200 back (2:08.41). Took third in the 100 fly.
Buffalo - Inger Rooneem Had three individual first-place finishes in the 50 free (24.39), 100 free
(53.04) and 200 individual medley (2:10.09) in a dual meet loss to Cornell. Also swam on the first-place 200
medley relay team (1:49.51).
Miami - Jennifer Blum Finished first in all three of her events over the weekend. Set season-best times
in the 400 IM (4:37.35) and 200 back (2:08.54). Finished first in 200 fly and 400 IM against BGSU.
Versus Toledo, was first in 200 fly and 400 IM.
Northern Illinois - Ann Schmitt Recorded season-best times in the 200 free relay (1:54.67) and 200
fly (2:10.84). Helped the Huskies 400 relay team swim a 3:42.19 and record a first-place finish against UWM.
Toledo - Dawn Hickey Placed second in the 1,000 free in a personal best-time of 10:16.36. Also,
finished third in the 500 free (5:08.89).

AKRON RECAP: Akron set four school records on Saturday in a double-dual at Eastern Michigan
with Cleveland State. The Zips lost both duals (143-76 vs. EMU and 144-80 vs. CSU), but the 200 medley relay
team of Darcy Wakefield, Kristy Castillo, Erin Crabtree and Carrie Manhart set a new UA standard of 1:57.33. In
3-meter diving, Krissy Hale broke her own school record posting a score of 181.45. Christina Burdiak
finished fourth overall in the 200 fly, but set a new UA record of 2:29.44 in the process. Finally, Kristy Castillo set a
new standard in the 200 breast with a time of 2:41.14
OHIO TOO MUCH FOR CARDINALS: Cardinal sophomore Erinn Hitch won two events, but Ohio
captured the other 14 on Saturday as the Bobcats posted a 189-111 victory in BSU's Lewellen Aquatic Center.
OU established three pool records en route to the win. Though not pool records, Hitch's swims were
equally impressive. Her clocking of 2:06.44 in the 200 fly allowed the defending MAC champion in the event to
remain unbeaten in the 200 fly in dual meets since Nov. 8, 1997. She is 8-0 in dual meets in the event this season
and has captured it in 15 consecutive dual meets. Hitch went 59.00 in the 100 fly to defeat teammate Mandy
Hammond and Ohio's Joanne Park, the defending league champion.
"HEATON" IT UP: Janene Heaton totaled three second-place finishes against Ohio. The freshman swam
the 11th-fastest race ever by a Cardinal with a career-best clocking of 2:24.98 to finish second in the 200 breast.
She placed second in the 400 individual medley in a time of 4:36.55, which ranks sixth in team annals. Heaton
went 1:07.93 and finished second in the 100 breast. The three runner-up placings improved her season total to 13,
which ties the seventh-highest single-season total in Ball State history. Heaton boasts a team-high 32 individual
top-three finishes this season.
SENIORS SWIM IN FINAL DUAL MEET THIS
WEEK: BSU closes the dual meet portion of its season
at Butler (7 p.m.) on Wednesday and in Muncie with Bowling Green (4 p.m.) on Saturday. BGSU will be the
final dual meet for seniors Elizabeth Badgett, Janelle Buster, Jessica Dunn, Robin Fearrin, Ulli Raue, Caroline Siwek
and Erica Zielke. The seven have combined for 244 individual top-three finishes and 83 relay wins.
BOWLING GREEN QUICK NOTES: Bowling Green will entertain Akron on Friday, Feb. 5, at 5 p.m., and
then travel to Ball State on Saturday, Feb. 6, to conclude the regular season. The Falcons are coming off a split
last weekend. BGSU defeated Valparaiso, 148-88 on Jan. 29, before falling to Miami, 185-115 on Jan. 30.
EMU GETS THREE WINS OVER WEEKEND: Eastern Michigan improved its record to 8-2 overall and
4-1 in the MAC with wins against Oakland, Cleveland State and Akron. The Eagles beat the host Grizzlies
169-131 on Jan. 29, and then beat Cleveland State 137-89 and Akron 143-76 at home on Jan. 30. Sarah Conger
was unbeatable in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events, taking first place on both days with times of 24.44 and
24.26 in the 50 and 53.16 and 52.86 in the 100. Against Oakland, Conger also teamed with Jennifer Arnold,
Kristin Keery and Meghan Harrigan to win the 400 medley relay, while posting a winning and season-best time of
1:54.0 in the 200 free in the same meet. Also attaining multiple wins against Oakland were: Arnold in the 100 and
200 fly (58.29, 2:06.25), Jacy Leonard in the 500 free and the 200 individual medley (5:09.05, 2:14.16) and
Emily McCarty on the 1- and 3-meter diving events (245.62, 281.55). At the tri-meet the following day,
several swimmers continued their winning ways. Arnold took first in both the 200 and 500 freestyle events
(1:56.39, 5:09.29); Leonard swam a season-best time of 2:09.15 in the 200 fly for first-place title; and Danielle Reich
took home a first place in the 400 individual medley (4:39.25) and a second place in the 200 back (2:12.87). Amy
Friend also posted a win in the 1,000 free (10:43.33) and was fourth in the 200 back (2:18.11).
NEXT TIME IN THE WATER: The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team
closes out its season at home with meets against Miami on Feb. 5, at 4 p.m. and Toledo on Feb. 13, at 7 p.m.
MIAMI NOTES: Miami has won four MAC dual meets in a row, knocking off Bowling Green and Toledo
this past weekend. Miami captured 13 first-place finishes over the weekend, led by Jennifer Blum and Cassie
Eakins with three and Amanda Furlano with two. Blum's time of 2:08.54 in the 200 back was a Miami season best.
Against BGSU, Miami set a season best in the 400 freestyle relay (3:36.74).
NORTHERN ILLINOIS NOTES: Kelly Amundson swam a season-best 10:35.42 for first place in the
1,000 free in Northern Illinois' non-conference 149-96 victory at Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Sophomore Ann
Schmitt proved her well-roundedness by racing to two individual firsts in the 200 fly (2:10.84) and 200 free (1:54.67).
She then swam the second leg of the second-place 400 free relay team (3:42.19). NIU diver Heather
Gagliano won blue ribbons with 247.275 points in the one-meter diving (six dives) and 257.250 points in the
three-meter diving (six dives). Northern Illinois' women are now 4-3 overall with a 2-2 Mid-American Conference record.
This Friday (Feb. 5), Northern Illinois' women face No. 12-ranked Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois.
OHIO'S GREG WERNER DIVES INTO USA COACHING
POSITION: Ohio swimming and diving coach Greg Werner has been selected to serve as the Head Manager/Team Leader for the USA Swim Team at the
World University Games, July 2-13, 1999, in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Entering his fourth year at Ohio,
Werner's selection was based on his experience as Team Leader for the USA Swim Team at the Goodwill Games in
New York City last summer. Werner's selection as a national coach follows a history of coaching honors. In 1991
and 1993, Werner was on the staff at the Olympic Festivals in Minneapolis and San Antonio. He also served on
the USA staff at the 1997 Pan American Games in Mar Del Plata, Argentina.
TOLEDO NOTES: Toledo fell to Miami, 162-80 on Jan. 29. The women were led by Marsha
Clouthier's victories in the 200 free (1:54.72) and 200 fly (2:06.96). Sophomore Yvette Victor added a win in the 100
free with a time of 53.49. The Rockets will head to Cleveland State on Feb. 5, before returning home to swim
against Ohio on Feb. 6.
