Eastern Michigan - Mark Leonard Took home six first- place finishes in the freestyle events.
Against Oakland, was first in the 1,000 free (9:29.66), 200 free (1:41.84), and 500 free (4:38.47), and repeated as
the winner in the same events against Cleveland State on Jan. 30 with times of 9:29.60, 1:43.05, and
4:35.69 respectively.
Other Notable Performances
Bowling Green - Andy Jenkins Anchored the first-place 200 medley relay team (1:40.16)
against Valparaiso. Also, took first in the 50 free (21.57) and 100 breast (1:01.58). Placed second in the 50
free (21.49) against Miami.
Buffalo - Dan Hickey Recorded two individual first-place finishes in the 100 free (46.85) and 200
free (1:41.61). Also, was a member of the first-place 400 free relay team (3:09.54).
Miami - Kevin Mulgrew Led Miami with four first-place finishes over the weekend. His time of
9:30.24 in the 1,000 free vs. Toledo last Friday was a season best and the second fastest time in the MAC this season.
His time of 1:57.29 in the 200 fly placed him third.
Northern Illinois - Mick Coyne Swam a season best 1:43.48 in the 200 free and another season-best in
the 200 back (1:53.28). Then led the 400 medley relay team, swimming the opening leg, to a
season-best 3:31.66 against UWM.
Ohio - Doug Grebe Placed first in the 200 individual medley (1:59.04) and the 200 back (2:12.15).
Recorded a second-place finish in the 1,000 free (9:40.17).
Toledo - Thomas Ehrhardt Set a pool record in the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.13, eclipsing the
previous record of 1:51.97. Was a member of the first-place 400 free relay team (3:03.73).

CARDINALS FALL TO OHIO: Ohio won 12 of the 13 events and defeated Ball State 152.5-88.5 on
Saturday in BSU's Lewellen Aquatic Center. Sophomore Louwrens Appelcryn earned BSU a victory when he out
touched Ohio's Doug Grebe in the 1,000 free. Appelcryn went 9:39.84 -- the 20th-fastest time in BSU history -- to
defeat Grebe's 9:40.17. It was one of four races in the first six events that were decided by a half second or less.
OU's Vermund Vetnes went 21.90 to better senior Matt Pentland in the 50 free. In the 200 fly, Bobcat Josh
Schrage (1:56.14) finished with a strong final 15 yards to defeat junior Rob Christy, whose time of 1:56.19 was a
career best. Grebe also avenged his earlier loss when he posted a time of 1:59.04 in the 200 individual medley to
defeat BSU's Matt Pavlovich, a freshman who went a lifetime-best 1:59.16.
BSU ENDS DUAL-MEET SEASON WITH MEETS AGAINST BUTLER AND BOWLING
GREEN: Ball State concludes the dual meet portion of its schedule this week with a pair of meets. BSU will compete at
Butler on Wednesday (Feb. 3), at 7 p.m. The Cardinals will conclude their regular season on Saturday with a 1
p.m. meet against Mid-American Conference rival Bowling Green in Lewellen Aquatic Center. It will be the final
dual meet for BSU seniors Andy Boyce, Jeff Karr, Chris Kendall and Matt Pentland. The four have combined for
92 individual top-three finishes and 56 relay wins during their careers. Boyce ranks ninth in team annals with
30 career relay victories.
A BRIEF, BRIEF LOOK AT THE ALL-TIME
SERIES': Ball State boasts a 15-0 all-time lead in its series
with Butler, including a 112-66 win in Muncie last season. BSU has won 12 straight against Bowling Green to
take a 17-11 lead in that series. The Cardinals beat the Falcons 160-83 at BGSU last season.
BOWLING GREEN NOTES: Bowling Green will conclude the regular season on Saturday when the
Falcons entertain Ball State in a dual meet. BGSU is coming off a split last weekend. The Falcons beat Valparaiso,
138-87 on Jan. 29, before falling 174-66 to Miami on Jan. 30.
EMU GOES 2-0 FOR WEEKEND: The Eastern Michigan men's swimming and diving team dominated
the weekend, taking wins against Oakland, 163-76, on Jan. 29 and Cleveland State, 140.5-92.5, on Jan. 30. The
wins put the Eagles at 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the MAC. Mark Leonard was unbeatable in the freestyle events,
taking home six first places. Against Oakland, Leonard was first in the 1,000 free (9:29.66), 200 free (1:41.84), and
500 free (4:38.47). Leonard repeated as the winner in the same events against Cleveland State with times of
9:29.60, 1:43.05, and 4:35.69, respectively. Chris Dix picked up wins against both teams in the 50 free (21.27,
21.05), as did Josh Bateman in the 200 individual medley (1:55.88, 1:55.30). Mark Dell took home wins in the 200
fly (1:52.79, 1:53.67) and Brad Mulder won both 3-meter diving contests (271.20, 275.65). Eric Seidelman
got second place in the 100 free (46.95) at Oakland and then turned things around with a first-place finish in the
same event against Cleveland State (47.03). Bateman also recorded a first-place mark in the 200 back (1:53.32)
against Cleveland State, after finishing third against Oakland (1:55.69). Bryson Tan took first place in the 200
breast (2:08.41) against Cleveland State after finishing second at Oakland (2:07.32).
NEXT TIME IN THE WATER: The Eastern Michigan men's swimming and diving team will wrap up its
season at home with a Feb. 6 meet against Miami and a Feb. 13 meet against Toledo.
EMU SAYS GOOD-BYE TO SENIORS: EMU will bid farewell to seven seniors on Feb. 13 against Toledo.
Steve Dalton, Chris Dix, Mike Howe, Mark Leonard, Brad Mulder, Darcy Schrieber and Dave Zulkiewski
will all compete in their final regular-season meet on that day. The seven will have another chance to swim at
home when they compete in the Mid-American Conference Championships from March 4-6 at the Michael H.
Jones Natatorium. Eastern Michigan is the defending MAC champions.
MIAMI NOTES: Miami absorbed its first MAC loss at Toledo on Friday (Jan. 29), but rebounded on
Saturday to knock off Bowling Green and Buffalo. Miami totalled 13 first-place finishes over the weekend, led by
Kevin Mulgrew's four first-place finishes. Brian Davis captured first in three out of four diving competitions over
the weekend.
NORTHERN ILLINOIS NOTES: Northern Illinois secured nine first-place performances out of 13 events
to defeat non-conference foe Wisconsin-Milwaukee 135-108 last weekend to improve to 4-2 overall,
while remaining 2-2 in MAC action. Mick Coyne (200 free, 200 back) and Jon Worcester (1,000 free, 500 free)
each won two individual events. The Huskies' 400 medley relay team and 400 free relay team also recorded
first-place performances. Northern Illinois remains outside Mid-American Conference competition this weekend as
the Huskies travel to Evanston, Ill., Friday for a meet with the Big Ten Wildcats in the Norris Aquatic Center.
OHIO'S GREG WERNER DIVES INTO USA COACHING
POSITION: Ohio swimming and diving coach Greg Werner has been selected to serve as the Head Manager/Team Leader for the USA Swim Team at the
World University Games, July 2-13, 1999, in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Entering his fourth year at Ohio,
Werner's selection was based on his experience as Team Leader for the USA Swim Team at the Goodwill Games in
New York City last summer. Werner's selection as a national coach follows a history of coaching honors. In 1991
and 1993, Werner was on the staff at the Olympic Festivals in Minneapolis and San Antonio. He also served on
the USA staff at the 1997 Pan American Games in Mar Del Plata, Argentina.
TOLEDO NOTES: Toledo won seven of 13 events to post a 130-113 win over Miami on Jan. 29.
Thomas Ehrhardt finished first and set a pool record in the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.13. Tim McCann placed first
in both the 200 IM (1:54.40) and 200 back (1:54.06). The Rocket men also swept the relay events, winning the
400 medley and 400 free relays with times of 3:28.64 and 3:06.65, respectively.
