Kent sophomore Dave Mattle is this week's MAC Player of the Week after
hitting .529 (9-for-17) in the Golden Flashes' five wins. Mattle, who
also drove in 11 runs, hit three home runs, including a pair of
three-run home runs against Toledo. Of his five games, the outfielder
had four multi-hit contests and also scored five runs. Mattle also had
a 1.059 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage.
Other nominees:
Mark Malaska, Akron -- Batted .348 (8-for-23) in six games last week and
also drove in 11 runs and scored eight runs.
Shayne Ridley, Ball State -- Was 5-for-17 (.294) with two home runs and
six RBIs in five games.
Sean Ryan, Bowling Green -- Went 6-for-10 with three RBIs and two
doubles in three Falcon wins.
Shaun Gragg, Central Michigan -- Hit two home runs against Miami and
batted .571 (4-for-7) in three games, driving in two runs.
Vince Thomas, Eastern Michigan -- Had 15 hits in 23 at-bats (.652) over
a six-game period, including a 4-for-5 game with Saginaw Valley with
four RBIs.
John Brock, Northern Illinois -- Hit .667 (10-for-15) in six games with
10 runs scored, four doubles and three RBIs.
Chuck Lombardy, Ohio -- Hit four home runs last week, including three in
one game against Northern Illinois. Batted .538 (7-for-13) for the week
with eight RBIs.
Jason Stuecher, Toledo -- Batted .545 (12-for-22) with 10 RBIs and seven
runs scored in six games. Also hit two home runs and had five doubles.
John Toner, Western Michigan -- Was 7-for-12 (.583) in four league
games, driving in three runs.

Sharing MAC co-Pitcher of the Week honors ARE Ohio senior Tony Schiml
and Kent freshman Dirk Hayhurst. Schiml tossed a three-hit shutout in a
nine inning, extra-inning win against Ball State. Schiml struck out 11
and walked one in his first complete game of the year.
Hayhurst, meanwhile, turned in his second straight complete game shutout
in league play, blanking Eastern Michigan. Hayhurst allowed only two
hits, both of them singles, against the Eagles and fanned eight while
walking none.
Other nominees:
John Wilkinson, Akron -- Picked up his fifth win of the year against
Toledo, matching his total from a year ago. He struck out seven, walked
three and allowed nine hits and five runs, only one of which was earned.
Tony Fontana, Bowling Green -- Tossed a two-hit, complete game win over
Western Michigan, fanning eight and walking one.
Brian Miller, Northern Illinois -- Notched a win over Eastern Illinois,
working 5.2 innings. He struck out two and gave up six hits.
Kris Barnswell, Toledo -- Struck out and gave up five hits in a complete
game win over Akron, allowing only one earned run.
Keith Perez, Western Michigan -- Handed Miami its first league loss,
striking out 11 and walking five, while giving up six hits and three
runs.
