Miami junior Alissia Thompson has been named the 1998 Mid-American Conference Volleyball Pepsi Player of the Year. This honor is chosen by the MAC volleyball coaches.
Thompson, a middle hitter/outside hitter, helped lead Miami to the 1998 Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship, an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, and a share of the regular season title. Thompson registered 243 kills (3.80 kpg), a .314
attack percentage, 156 digs (2.44 dpg), 77 blocks (1.20 bpg) and 22 service aces in 18 MAC contests. Overall, Thompson totalled 386 kills (3.45 kpg), a .294 attack percentage, 221 digs (1.97 dpg), 114 blocks (1.02 bpg) in 32 matches. Thompson also was a
first-team All-MAC honoree.
Thompson and her Miami RedHawks will travel to Hawaii for the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Miami will face Nevada in the first round in Honolulu on December 5.
The 1998 season marks the third straight year that a Miami player has been chosen as the MAC Player of the Year. Jessica Stout was selected in 1997, while Lori Reinhart was picked in 1996.

Akron's Ashlie Case has been named the 1998 Mid-American Conference Volleyball Pepsi Freshman of the Year. Case, who didn't even move into the starting rotation until the beginning of conference play, finished the year with 304 kills (3.30 kpg), placing her third on the Akron squad. She recorded 12 double-doubles, including nine in her last 12 matches. In addition, she registered 300 digs (3.26 dpg), 32 blocks and five service aces. She was one of two Akron players to record 300 kills and 300 digs.
In 18 MAC matches, Case finished with 218 kills (3.46 kpg), 216 digs (3.41 dpg) and 21 blocks. She had her best game in a 3-2 win over Western Michigan (10/2), leading the team with 23 kills, 51 attacks and a .353 attack percentage. Akron finished second in the
MAC East Division and advanced to the MAC Volleyball Tournament.

Miami head coach Carolyn Condit has been named the 1998 Mid-American Conference Volleyball Qwest Coach of the Year. This honor is chosen by the MAC volleyball coaches.
Condit led Miami to the 1998 Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, and a share of the regular season title. The RedHawks will face Nevada in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 5.
Condit is in her 15th season at the helm of the Miami program. She is the winningest coach in Miami history (309-174, .640) and has the most conference victories (161) of any coach in the MAC. Over the past 15 years, Condit's teams have made five NCAA appearances (including this season), played in two NIVC tournaments, and won five MAC titles. This marks the fourth time that Condit has received the award.
