Buffalo - John Nilles Picked up first in 50 free (21.38) and was a member of the first-place 400 free relay
team (3:08.85) against Notre Dame. Placed first in 50 free (21.30) and 100 free (46.59) in dual meet loss to
Cleveland State.
Toledo - Dan Fries Had three individual first-place finishes and one relay first. Placed first in 50 free
(21.47) and 100 free (47.19) against Cleveland State. Also, was a member of the first-place 200 free relay team (1:26.64).
Against Ohio, finished first in 50 free (21.59), third in 100 free (47.29) and was a member of the
second-place 400 free relay team (3:08.57

Ball State - Louwrens Appelcryn Was the only double winner in BSU's win over Bowling Green.
Captured the 100 free (9:48.00) and 200 back (1:56.73).
Bowling Green - Jeff Allen Placed first on the three-meter (261.75) and one-meter (236.85) boards in dual
meet loss at Ball State.
Eastern Michigan - Mark Leonard Placed first in 1,000 free (9:26.37) and 500 free (4:37.19) against Miami.
Also, finished third in 200 fly (1:56.33).
Miami - Kevin Northup Picked up a pair of wins in Miami's narrow loss to Eastern Michigan. Captured
200 individual medley (1:54.17) and 200 fly (1:51.66) in season-best times.
Northern Illinois - Mick Coyne Best finish was a second-place mark in the 400 individual medley
(4:02.95) against Northwestern. Placed third in 100 back (52.99) and was a member of the third-place 200 medley
relay team (1:38.03).
Ohio - Vermund Vetnes Against Oakland, picked up first-place finishes in the 100 fly and 100 free.
Was second in 200 individual medley and a member of second-place 400 medley relay team. Against Toledo,
placed first in 200 free, 100 free and a member of first-place 400 free relay team.

CARDINALS DEFEAT BUTLER . . . : Ball State posted the fastest time in all 14 events on Wednesday
and defeated Butler 160-89 at the Natatorium in Indianapolis. A number of Cardinals earned their initial
collegiate victories in the meet. Senior Jeff Karr achieved the feat when he went a career-best 2:12.26 to claim the 200 breast.
Junior Rob Christy went 1:57.69 in the 200 fly to manage his first win as a Cardinal. Freshmen Matthew
Smith and Derek Juffer also earned their initial wins by going 1:48.38 in the 200 free and 1:01.23 in the 100
breast, respectively. Another freshman, Nick Badgett, earned his first victory with a clocking of 49.53 in the 100 free.
In another notable performance, sophomore Thomas Moore went a career-best 1:58.98 to claim the 200 back.
. . . AND BOWLING GREEN: The Cardinals captured the meet's first 10 events Saturday en route to a
168-73 victory over Bowling Green in BSU's Lewellen Aquatic Center. Freshman Matt Pavlovich went a
career-best 1:58.63 in the 200 individual medley to earn his first victory as a Cardinal. Freshman John Hubbard
managed his first win as a Cardinal with a time of 4:52.78 in the 500 free. Sophomore Louwrens Appelcryn was the
meet's only double victor -- capturing the 1,000 free (9:48.00) and 200 back (1:56.73). The win increased his
team-leading total to 11 for the season. Those are part of a team-leading 21 top-three finishes.
NEXT UP -- THE MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS: Ball State will take the next three weeks to prepare for the
Mid-American Conference Championships, which will be held March 4-6 in Ypsilanti, Mich. BSU scored 392
points at the 1998 league meet and finished fifth. The 1993 squad earned the school's highest finish when it
placed second with 625.5 points.
BOWLING GREEN NOTES: The Falcons are off until the MAC Championships (March 4-6). BGSU
placed sixth at last year's championship.
EMU CONTINUES STEAK WITH CLOSE WIN OVER
MIAMI: Eastern Michigan, which has not lost a
meet since being beaten by Michigan State, kept its streak alive with a 130-113 win against visiting Miami on Feb.
6. Mark Leonard pulled in first-place finishes in the 1,000 free (9:26.37) and 500 free (4:37.19) and was third in
the 200 fly (1:56.33). Also recording wins for the Eagles were: Eric Seidelman in the 200 free (1:41.65), Chris
Dix in the 100 free (45.90), and Josh Bateman in the 200 back (1:53.77). EMU also swept the relay events, with
the team of Dix, Seidelman, Bryan Szweda and Steve Dalton recording a time of 3:03.90 in the 400 free relay
and Bateman, Dix, Mark Dell and Bryson Tan going 3:26.32 in the 400 medley relay.
NEXT TIME IN THE WATER: The Eagles will wrap up their regular season on Feb. 13 when they host
Toledo at home at 1 p.m.
MIAMI FALLS TO EASTERN MICHIGAN: Miami absorbed a tight MAC loss to defending league
champion Eastern Michigan this past weekend. The RedHawks picked up a total of five first-place finishes, with
Kevin Northup claiming two. Miami also swept the diving events, with Andrew Campbell winning the three meter
and Brian Davis capturing the one-meter board. Miami is off until the MAC Swimming and Diving Championship.
NORTHERN ILLINOIS NOTES: Northern Illinois found rough waters at Northwestern's Norris
Aquatic Center as the host Wildcats took first place in all 13 events to defeat non-conference foe NIU 170-67 on
Friday (Feb. 5). Mick Coyne battled to a 4:02.95 for second place in the 400 individual medley and a third-place
showing in the 100 back (52.99). Stewart Smith raced his way to a second-place result in the 50 free thanks to a
21.61, just behind the winning time of 21.32. Stewart also swam the final leg of NIU's 200 free relay team (Peter
Cabo, Tim Griffin, and Jon Worcester) which placed second in 1:26.36.
