Marshall and Northern Illinois Student-Athletes Recognized as MAC Players of the Week

    CLEVELAND (Nov. 21) -- Marshall's Latece Williams (East Division) and Northern Illinois' Mike Brown (West Division) are the recipients of the Mid-American Conference men's basketball Player of the Week awards for the first week of the 2000-01 season.

    MAC East Division Player of the Week

    Marshall University's Latece Williams (6-8, F, Jr., Rome, Ga.)
    Williams nearly posted a quadruple-double as his 16 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists and school-record tying 9 blocked shots in just 23 minutes led the way to a 109-75 win over Charleston. Williams, a transfer from Okaloosa-Walton Community College in Niceville, Fla., made his Division I debut with the Thundering Herd in Friday's season-opener.

    MAC West Division Player of the Week

    Northern Illinois' Mike Brown (6-0, G, Sr., Schaumberg, Ill.)
    Despite the Huskies losing twice, Brown was named to the all-tournament team at the Doral/Florida International Tournament held last week in Miami, Fla. Brown averaged 19.5 ppg, scoring 20 in an 81-67 loss to Hofstra and 19 in a 76-72 loss to Belmont. Brown's six three-point field goals during the tournament increased his career total to 131, third-best all-time at NIU.

    West Division Player of the Week nominations
    (Ball State, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois, Toledo, Western Michigan)

    Central Michigan's Mike Manciel (6-5, F, So., Detroit, Mich.) scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds in only 19 minutes of play in his first game back in over a year. He was 4-of-6 from the floor and 3-of-4 from three-point range in an 86-44 win over Spring Arbor.

    Western Michigan's Steve Reynolds(6-7, Jr., F, South Bend, Ind.) led all scorers in his Bronco debut, including a three-pointer in the final seconds to force the overtime session. Seven of his 10 rebounds came on the offensive end to complete the double-double. He also connected on 3-of-6 three-point attempts in an 87-81 overtime loss to Hampton.

    East Division Player of the Week nominations
    (Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Kent State, Marshall, Miami, Ohio)

    Buffalo's Robert Brown (6-4, F, Jr., Oak Park, Mich.) started the season with his first double-double, scoring a game-high 25 points and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds in an 80-76 loss to Niagara. Both were also career highs for Brown. He hit 7-of-8 from the free-throw line as well.
