CLEVELAND, OH - (March 28) Kent's Demetric Shaw (basketball) and Ohio's Katie Geib
(track and field) were named the MAC Scholar Athletes of the Week on
March 28, 2000.
Shaw (So., 3.70, chemistry, Fort Worth, Texas) collected 12 points and
six rebounds in an 81-67 victory over Villanova on March 20. He scored
15 points and five rebounds in an 81-74 loss to Penn State on March 22.
Shaw averaged 13.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals in the two games
and was 9-of-15 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line.
Geib (Sr., 3.89, engineering, Erie, Pa.) won two events at Navy last
weekend, winning the 800-meter dash (2:14.90) and tying for first place
in the high jump (1.64 meters). Ohio placed second in the track meet
behind Navy.
The honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has
a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well
during that week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the
conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Female Nominees:
Bowling Green: Jessie Milosek (softball, So., 3.84, human movement
science, Brighton, Mich.) had an earned-run average of 0.00 in 11 2/3
innings of work at the Hoo's Who Tournament, hosted by Virginia. She
threw a complete game, a five-hit shutout against host UVA in a 3-0 BG
win. She also threw 4 2/3 innings of relief versus Rutgers. Milosek
allowed no earned runs and just nine hits on the week. She walked three
and struck out seven batters. Milosek is 4-1 on the season with a ERA
of 0.83. She has thrown two complete-game shutouts this year and has
combined on two others.
Miami: Kadija Richards (tennis, So., 3.25, undecided, Kingston,
Jamaica) posted a 2-0 record at No. 1, leading Miami to a 1-1 MAC record
on the week. She knocked off BGSU's Abby Bratton in straight sets and
bounced back from a loss in the first set against Ball State's Gena
Tranquada to post 7-5 wins in the final two sets. Richards is now 8-2
at the No. 1 spot and has a win streak of eight. She suffered an 8-5
loss to the Falcons at No. 2 doubles for her only loss of the week.
Toledo: Olga Fedotova (tennis, Sr., 3.27, chemical engineering, Kiev,
Ukraine) won both of her matches at No. 3 singles to help the Rockets
open the MAC season with two wins. Toledo now has a five-match win
streak. Fedotova is 6-0 in dual matches this year.
Male Nominees:
Bowling Green: John Hustler (track and field, Sr., 3.04, physical
education, Cobourg, Ontario) won the javelin at the Alabama Relays (17
competitors) with a throw of 207'7", easily defeating the second-place
mark of 190'1".
Marshall: Marty Rini (baseball, So., 3.25, sport management and
marketing, Bethel Park, Penn.) led the Thundering Herd to a perfect 2-0
record last week, batting .600 with a triple and two home runs. He
posted a 1.400 slugging percentage in two games and now leads the team
with eight home runs. His four-hit performance on Saturday was the
first of his career and the third for the Herd this season. Rini was
just a double short of hitting for the cycle against Youngstown State on
Saturday. He leads the team with eight multiple RBI games and ranks
second with a seven multi-hit games. Rini is third on the team with a
.365 batting average this season and leads the team with a .825 slugging
percentage. At 10-10, the Herd is just two wins shy of equalling its
win total from all of last season (12-43-1).
Miami: Tom Yost (baseball, Jr., 3.73, elementary education, Londo,
Ohio) batted .583 (7-for-12) as the RedHawks posted a 4-1 mark for the
week. Coming into the week, Yost was batting .250, but has raised his
average to .317 to rank fourth on the team. In Miami's 7-3 victory over
Butler, Yost connected for two hits, including a double, and scored
twice. On Saturday, Yost led Miami to a 16-2 romp over Spalding. He
went a perfect 3-for-3 with a season-high four runs scored, one RBI and
one stolen base. A GTE Academic All-American in 1999, Yost is tied for
the team lead in runs scored (20) and is fourth in slugging percentage
(.483), on-base percentage (.400) and home runs (2).
Ohio: Ryan Kyes (baseball, Jr., 3.30, business, White Lake, Mich.) went
8-for-16 with four runs and four RBI. He hit two home runs, two doubles
and had one sacrifice fly. Ohio went 3-3 on the weekend.
Toledo: Tim Rice (golf, Sr., 3.19, business, Limerick, Ireland)
finished tied for 12th place at the Dr. Pepper Intercollegiate to help
the Rockets to a fifth-place tie. Rice shot a three-round total of 214
(68-75-71).
