CLEVELAND, OH -- Ball State's Laura Szczepanski (gymnastics) and Miami's
Jason Grunkemeyer (men's basketball) were named the MAC Scholar Athletes
of the Week on January 19, 2000.
Szczepanski (Sr. 3.99, pre-med, Leo, Ind.) led Ball State to the
championship at the Cardinal Classic with her first-place finish in the
all-around competition (38.975). She recorded the second-highest score
in school history when she scored a 9.850 on the beam for second-place.
She also tied for second place on the bars and finished fourth on the
vault and floor.
Grunkemeyer (Jr., 3.40, physical education, Cincinnati, Ohio) helped
Miami go 2-0 last week in conference action with a triple overtime win
at Ball State and a triumph at league-leader Akron. It was the Zips'
first MAC loss of the season. He drained a three-pointer to tie the
game against Ball State with 4.9 seconds on the clock, sending the game
into overtime. He tallied 24 points in the two wins (15 vs. BSU and
nine against Akron). Grunkemeyer shot 8-of-18 from three-point range
and had three assists and one steal.
The honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has
a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well
during that week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the
conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Female Nominees:
Akron: Erica Glover (women's basketball, Jr., 3.20, special
education/sociology, Warren, Ohio) averaged 15.5 points per game, 7.0
assists per game and 1.0 steals per game as Akron split two MAC
contests. She scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a loss to
Western Michigan and shot 12-of-27 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the
free throw line.
Bowling Green: Angie Farmer (women's basketball, Jr., 3.87,
education/social studies, Wayland, Mich.) scored a career-high 24 points
in BG's 79-74 win at Ohio on Saturday. She picked up 21 of those points
in the second half with 11 straight coming in a period of just over a
minute. She picked up three treys in as many trips down the floor, in
just 50 seconds. With the shot clock winding down and Bowling Green up
by a point, Farmer hit a running jumper in the lane to put the Falcons
up 77-74 with just 16.2 seconds on the clock. She was 9-of-13 from the
floor, including 6-of-10 from long range. She hit 8-of-10 shots (5-of-7
for three pointers) in the second half.
Central Michigan: Alicia Rozak (women's basketball, So., 3.16, math
education, Sterling Heights, Mich.) averaged 15.0 points, 6.0 rebounds
and 3.5 assists in CMU's two games last week. She was 17-of-20 from the
free-throw line.
Miami: Jenny Martin (women's basketball, Jr., 3.29, exercise science,
Greenwood, Ind.) helped Miami to league wins over Northern Illinois and
Marshall. Against NIU, Martin started the game off making her first
nine shots en route to 9-of-10 shooting and 23 points for the game. She
was also 5-of-6 from the free-throw line while contributing two steals
and two rebounds. Martin was one of just two RedHawks to score in
double digits against Marshall with 10 points. She also recorded four
rebounds and a steal in the game. She is currently Miami's leading
scorer.
Ohio: Lisa Hindenlang (women's basketball, Jr., 3.85, dietetics,
Pickerington, Ohio) scored 12 points and had five rebounds, one assist
and one steal against Kent. In a game against Bowling Green, Hindenlang
scored 10 points and had nine rebounds. She ranks second on the team in
rebounding (5.0) and is fifth in scoring (7.9).
Toledo: Karin Husbeck (women's basketball, Sr., 3.99, pre-med, Haslett,
Mich.) scored in double figures in both of last week's games to help the
Rockets extend their win streak to a season-high three games. She had
10 points and season highs with three assists and two steals in 36
minutes against Bowling Green. In a win over Central Michigan, Husbeck
scored 14 points and made all six of her free throws. She leads the
team with a .794 free-throw percentage.
Other Male Nominees:
Central Michigan: Tim Kisner (men's basketball, Jr., 3.00, sports
studies, Hopkins, Mich.) averaged 17.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.5
assists in CMU's two games last week. He was 12-of-12 from the
free-throw line against Western Michigan on Saturday.
Ohio: Shane Hartzler (wrestling, Jr., 3.05, health education, Orville,
Ohio) recorded two wins on Sunday. In the 141-pound weight class,
defeated No. 13 Cory Ace (Edinboro ) in a 4-1 decision. In a match
against Buffalo, Hartzler defeated Bill Jacoutot. Hartzler is 14-1 on
the season.
Toledo: William Adjei (men's track and field, Sr., 3.56, international
business, Legon, Ghana) won the individual title in the triple jump
(46'11") at the EMU Open. He currently leads the league in the triple
jump with his leap of 47'5" a week ago.
Western Michigan: Dale Cowper (men's indoor track and field, So., 3.60,
elementary education, Marlette, Mich.) took home top honors in the shot
put (54'5.25") and wieght throw (59'11.75") at the Michigan State
Invitational. Both were personal-best marks for Cowper.
