Divisional Races Tighten The Gap
Ohio Stopped By #1 Cincinnati
MAC Saturday saw the Miami RedHawks halt the Akron Zips six-game MAC winning streak with a 55-48 win at the JAR in Akron. The three other East Division contenders who played league games all won - Kent, Bowling Green and Marshall - and gained a game on the Zips.
In the West Divison, Northern Illinois won its second straight league game and handed Ball State its third straight MAC loss in a 76-64 decision in Muncie. West leader Eastern Michigan lost at Marshall and saw its lead slip to one-half game over NIU.
Miami 55 at Akron 48 - The RedHawks (7-6, 3-2) scored the last nine points of the game while the Zips (12-4, 6-1) were scoreless the last five minutes. Anthony Taylor led the RedHawks with 18 points and Jason Stewart pumped in 11 off the bench. Miami made 14-of-15 free throws. Akron's Ryan Andrick was the lone Zip in double figures with 14 points.
Northern Illinois 76 at Ball State 64 - The Huskies (9-6, 3-3) moved into contention for the West Division title with its 12-point win over the Cardinals (10-4, 2-3) who lost their third in a row. Leon Rodgers added 21 and Mike Brown 11 for the Huskies, who won despite committing 21 turnovers. NIU shot 56.5% (26-of-56) from the field and held BSU to 35.6% (21-of-59) from the floor. Duane Clemens led the Cardinals with 14 points. BSU has now lost three in a row, all MAC games, since its 10-game winning streak.
At Marshall 83, Eastern Michigan 68 - The Thundering Herd (13-2, 5-2) sped to a 19-point half-time lead and cruised to their third straight league win over the Eagles (9-5, 3-2), which lost their second consecutive MAC contest. All five Marshall starters scored in double figures, led by MAC scoring leader Tamar Slay's 20. Marshall's guard combination of Cornelius Jackson (18, 6) and Travis Young (11, 7) combined for 29 points and 13 assists. EMU's Antonio Gates had 19 points and 12 rebounds while Ryan Prillman chipped in with 16 points off the bench.
At Kent 89, Buffalo 53 - Six Golden Flashes' (12-2, 4-1) players scored in double figures in their win over the Bulls (3-12, 1-5), who were coming off their first MAC win of the year. At Bowling Green 93, Toledo 76 - The Falcons (12-3, 4-1) jumped to an 18-point half-time lead to route the Rockets (7-10, 1-5). BG's Len Matela made 12-of-13 field goals and the Falcons improved on their league leading field goal shooting by making 33-of-54 (61.1%). Matela was just short of the MAC field goal percentage record for a single game which is 12-of-12 by Kent's John Whorton in 1998 versus Akron and Central Michigan's Jeff Tropf in 1978 versus Northern Illinois. Toledo was paced in scoring by Robierre Cullars' 23 points and Chad Kamstra's 18.
