Central Michigan's Liphardt and Miami's Stewart Named MAC Scholar Athletes

CLEVELAND, OH -- Central Michigan's Nikki Liphardt (gymnastics) and Miami's Jason Stewart (men's basketball) were named the MAC Scholar Athletes of the Week on March 14, 2000.

Liphardt (Sr., 3.23, physical education, Ajax, Ontario) helped CMU to a school-record score in a 195.825-192.800 win over Western Michigan on Saturday, March 11. She tied the school record on the bars for the second time this season with a 9.900. Liphardt also took top honors on the floor exercise with a 9.900. She placed second all-around (39.275) and third on the beam (9.825).

Stewart (Sr., 3.00, engineering physics, Atlanta, Ga.) earned a spot on the MAC all-tournament team after leading Miami to the MAC Tournament Championship game. In a semifinal defeat over Marshall on March 6, Stewart tallied a career-high 32 points off a 10-of-12 shooting form the beyond the three-point arc. His 10 three-pointers were a Miami, MAC and MAC Tournament record. In the championship game, Stewart poured in 25 points, including four three-pointers and recorded seven rebounds. He averaged 28.5 points and shot 54 percent from three-point land on the week.

The honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.

Female Nominees:

Akron: Arianna Rojas-Serpa (women's tennis, So., 3.71, sports medicine, Mexico City, Mexico) was a perfect 2-0 last Wednesday, winning at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-3) and at No. 1 doubles (9-8, 6) in a narrow Akron loss to St. Bonaventure (4-3).

Kent: Kristy High (gymnastics, Sr., 3.75, exercise sciences, Cortland, Ohio) broke Kent's school record in the floor exercise with a 9.975 in a 196.775-191.050 win over Eastern Michigan on March 10. High also scored 9.750 on the bars and 9.850 on the beam.

Ohio: Heather Fueger (women's golf, Sr., 3.52, recreation management, W. Lafayette, Ind.) tied for third place at the Springlake Classic with a 148 (74-74) to lead Ohio to the team title. It was Fueger's fifth top-10 finish in six tournaments this season and her fourth finish in the top five. Ohio won the tournament by nine strokes, marking the Bobcats' third tournament title this season. Ohio's lowest team finish was a fifth.

Toledo: Olga Fedotova (women's tennis, Sr., 3.27, chemical engineering, Kiev, Ukraine) won all four matches she played in a round-robin dual-match tournament in Phoenix, Ariz. She recorded victories over opponents from Pittsburgh, Duquesne, Gonzaga and Bryn Mawr College.

Male Nominees:

Marshall: Sam O'Dell (men's golf, Sr., 3.44, biology, Hurricane, W.Va.) led Marshall to the William and Mary Invitational Championship by finishing second overall with a 36-hole total of 145 in the 24-team tournament at Kingsmill Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. (March 6-7). O'Dell tied for fifth place (75-76-151) at the Wolverine South Invitational at the Hunter Golf Club in Savannah, Ga., leading Marshall to a sixth-place team finish in the 18-team tournament (March 3-4).
