MAC Wrestling Team Notes:
Buffalo as a team finished third out of 21 teams at the NYS Collegiate Championships. The Bulls had three first-place finishes -- David Guarino (165 lbs.), Josh States (184) and Ryan Bentley (141) -- more than any other team. Buffalo hosts Kent State on Saturday. Both schools are 2-0 in MAC matches, while Central Michigan at 1-0 is also tied with the two schools for first place.
Central Michigan extended its MAC unbeaten string to 15 straight matches with a 19-15 win over Ohio. The streak dates back to Jan. 25, 1998. In addition to Brett Faustman's win over No. 11 Dan Bednar (Ohio), the Chippewas' Ahmad Sanders at 125 lbs. (No. 14) and Jason Mester (No. 13) at 141 lbs., also won.
Kent State's Jim Swetter notched his 14th fall of the season against Franklin & Marshall, the second most in school history for one year. Swetter, who passed himself for second, needs three more falls to set a school record. KSU had a season-high five falls against Franklin & Marshall, while 17 different wrestlers picked up wins over the weekend.
After missing all of last year due to injury, Northern Illinois' Scott Owen reached the 20-win plateau for the second time in his career. The junior is 20-4 this year and compiled a 21-9 mark as a sophomore in 1999.
Ohio finished its regular season home schedule with a 4-1 mark. Its only loss came to Central Michigan last Sunday. The Bobcats, who host the MAC Wrestling Championships Mar. 3-4, will finish the regular season with seven straight road contests.
