Kent's Shaw and Ohio's Bresser Named MAC Scholar Athletes of the Week

CLEVELAND, OHKent's Demetric Shaw (men's basketball) and Ohio's Emily Bresser (women's swimming) were named the MAC Scholar Athletes of the Week on December 6, 1999.

Shaw (men's basketball, So., 3.70, chemistry, Fort Worth, Texas) averaged 9.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals in wins over Wisconsin-Parkside (85-56) and Youngstown State (72-53). He was seven-of-nine from the free-throw line and 6-of-12 from the field. Shaw scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds in the win over Wisconsin-Parkside.

Bresser (women's swimming, Jr., 3.95, telecommunications, Crestview, Ky.) finished first in the 200 backstroke (2:04.88) and was part of the first-place 400-yard medley relay team (3:54.24) at the Dec. 1 meet against N.C. State.

The honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.

Other Nominees:

Central Michigan: Vershaun Jones (women's basketball, So., 3.35, design & graphics engineering, Detroit, Mich.) scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds in CMU's lone game against Eastern Michigan last week. She also had two assists and a steal. Jones is leading CMU in rebounding with 8.0 boards per game. She has been in double figures in scoring or rebounding in all four games played this season.

Kent: Dawn Zerman (women's basketball, Sr., 3.13, marketing, Fremont, Ohio) averaged 22.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals in two games this week, a 76-68 victory over Pittsburgh and an 83-70 loss to nationally-ranked (#22/24) Boston College. She went 16-for-17 (.941) at the free-throw line and shot nearly 50 percent from the floor in the two games (11-24, .458). Included in that percentage was 7-for-13 (.538) shooting from three-point range. Zerman leads Kent on the season with 17.3 points and 4.3 steals per game.

Miami: Hollie Nelsen (women's basketball, Jr., 3.12, health education, Waupaca, Wis.) was named to the Roger L. White Invitational All-Tournament team after helping Miami to the title. Against Northwestern in the title game, Nelsen netted 13 points while compiling five rebounds, two blocks and two assists. After entering the week in a shooting slump, Nelson was 9-of-15 (.600) from the floor.

Ohio: Nick Melillo (men's swimming, Sr., 3.59, mechanical engineering, Cincinnati, Ohio) placed first in the 200 freestyle (1:43.70) and was a member of the first-place squad in the 400-free relay (3:11.01) in Ohio's Dec. 1 meet against North Carolina State.
