Northern Illinois Knocks Off Akron, 52-35

AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Thomas Hammock overwhelmed Akron, rushing for 174 yards and five touchdowns and leading Northern Illinois to a win, 52-35, on Oct. 14 in a Mid-American Conference matchup.

Hammock's 34-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter helped supply the Huskies with their final margin of victory. Northern Illinois (4-2, 2-0 in the MAC) has won three straight.

Akron (4-3, 3-2) relied in quarterback Butchie Washington, who was productive again, going 12-of-28 for 324 yards and three touchdowns. His 31 career TD passes is the best ever at Akron.

Northern Illinois led 24-21 at the half. The Zips took the lead early in the third quarter as Washington connected with Jake Schifino on a 78-yard scoring pass.

But a field goal and two Hammock touchdowns gave the Huskies a commanding 42-28 lead going into the final period.

The two teams were penalized often, with 247 penalty yards marked off in the game. Akron was flagged 10 times for 148 yards.
