WMU, NIU and Kent State Student-Athletes Named MAC Football Players of the Week

    Cleveland, Ohio (Oct. 9) - Running back Robert Sanford of Western Michigan, Northern Illinois defensive back Buster Sampson and Kent State placekicker David Pavich were honored as this week's Mid-American Conference Players of the Week for the sixth week of the season.

    MAC Offensive Player of the Week
    Western Michigan running back Robert Sanford (Sr., Miami, Fla.)

    Sanford rushed for a MAC season-high 203 yards and three touchdowns to spark the Broncos to a 30-10 win at Marshall on Thursday, Oct. 5, on an ESPN Thursday night telecast. Sanford averaged 7.8 yards per carry and came within two yards of his career-high. The win snapped the Herd's 33-game home winning streak.

    MAC Defensive Player of the Week
    Northern Illinois free safety Buster Sampson (Sr., Fort Meade, Fla.)

    Sampson became the fourth Huskie defensive back in the last two years to gain a MAC Defensive Player of the Week award for his performance in NIU's 40-20 win over Central Florida. Sampson created havoc in the Knights' game plan with 10 tackles (8 solo), one tackle for a loss, one caused fumble, two pass deflections, one interception and a fumble returned 24 yards for a touchdown.

    Akron DB Rich Reliford (13 tackles, 3 goal line stops vs. BGSU); Ball State ILB Shaka Johnson (had 12 tackles, 3 tfl, 1 sack vs. Miami); Kent State OLB James Harrison (9 tackles, 8 solos vs. CMU); Ohio SS Chris London (6 tackles, 1 int. vs. Buffalo); Toledo LB Kevin Rollins (5 tackles, 1 int., 2 deflections vs. EMU); Western Michigan CB Ronald Rogers (8 tackles, 1 int. vs. Marshall).

    MAC Special Teams Player of the Week
    Kent State placekicker David Pavich (Jr., Boca Raton, Fla.)

    Pavich kicked the game-winning field goal in the second overtime in a 24-21 win at Central Michigan as the Golden Flashes ended their seven-game losing streak. Pavich rebounded after missing a 33-yard attempt with 1:20 left in regulation and added three PATs for a total of six points.
