Akron Holds Off Bowling Green, 27-21

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (Oct. 7, 2000) -- Butchie Washington passed for three touchdowns and Mike Hughes returned an interception 26 yards for a TD as Akron beat Bowling Green 27-21 on October 7th at Doyt Perry Stadium.

The Falcons were stopped twice inside the Zips' 10 in the fourth quarter, including one drive when the Falcons failed to score from the 1 on three tries.

Washington was 16-of-26 for 242 yards for Akron (4-2, 3-1 Mid-American). He threw touchdown passes of 25 yards to Jack Schifino, 14 yards to Tim Ritley and 21 yards to Lavel Bailey. The last two passes gave the Zips a 28-14 lead in the third quarter.

Andy Sahm was 15-of-24 for 185 yards and two touchdowns for the Falcons (1-5, 1-2).

Ellington's touchdown at the end of the first quarter gave Akron a 14-7 lead. John Gibson tied it for the Falcons on a 1-yard score in the second quarter.

Gibson rushed for 149 yards on 35 carries. David Bautista had eight catches for 108 yards for Bowling Green, including a 5-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

Bailey had six catches for 108 yards for Akron.
