CLEVELAND, OHIO (June 5, 2000) -- The Mid-American Conference today announced its top
institutional awards for overall athletic achievement as Kent State
University (men's) and Ball State University (women's) were honored
for the 1999-2000 season. Kent State won the Reese Award for the
first time ever while Ball State earned its second Jacoby Trophy.
Kent State's women finished just 1.5 points behind Ball State in the
Jacoby standings.
The Reese Trophy is an annual trophy named for former MAC commissioner
David E. Reese awarded to the MAC university with the six-highest finishes
in the 11 men's sports for which the MAC sponsors championships. The top
six sports per university are to be counted; however, three of the six must
be football, basketball, and baseball. Schools may count only one track and
field score, indoor or outdoor, but not both.
The Jacoby Trophy is an annual trophy named for former MAC commissioner
Fred Jacoby, awarded to the MAC university with the six-highest finishes
in the 12 women's sports for which the MAC sponsors championships. The
top-six sports per university are to be counted; however, three of the
six must be basketball, volleyball, and softball.
Kent State's men scored 65 points with first-place finishes in three
sports (baseball, outdoor track and field and golf) and two second-place
finishes (basketball and indoor track and field). The Golden Flashes finished
third to score 11 points in wrestling.
Ball State's women won volleyball and the outdoor track and field championship for
two first-place finishes en-route to a 65.5 point total in the Jacoby standings.
The Cardinals split a first-place finish with Kent in field hockey for 12.5 points
and rallied for another 12 points with a second-place finish in gymnastics.
