IOWA CITY, Iowa - (Nov. 13) The Kent State University field hockey team (17-6) ended its 1999 season with a thrilling 3-2 loss to the University of Iowa Nov. 13 in the first
round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Golden Flashes, ranked 14th in the country, lost to the host
Hawkeyes, ranked fourth, on a goal with 2:34 remaining in the contest.
Kent held a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to a Helen Jerdan (Glasgow,
Scotland) with 23:14 left in the first stanza. She scored on a penalty
corner and was assisted by Maggie Downey (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph
Academy) and Inge Corten (Nijmegen, The Netherlands). Goalkeeper
Janelle Lynch (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) saved a penalty stroke
and stopped an Iowa two-on-zero breakaway to keep the Hawkeyes off the
scoreboard in the first half.
Iowa scored two unassisted goals in the first 15:30 of the second half
to take a 2-1 lead. Corten then evened the score with an unassisted goal at
the 5:08 mark.
It looked like Kent would force overtime when Lynch saved another
penalty stroke, this time just seconds after Corten's score. However,
Iowa's pressure earned the team a goal with less then three minutes
remaining in regulation to earn the victory.
Kent stayed close to the Hawkeyes despite being outshot 36-4 and
gaining just three corners to Iowa's 13.
The Flashes ended the season with a 17-6 record, earning a share of the
Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season title, winning their second
consecutive MAC Tournament and advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
