MUNCIE, Ind. (November 6) -- Ball State's Sally Northcroft, a senior forward from
Harara Zimbabwe, was named the regular season Player of the Year by the
Mid-American Conference Head Coaches. Kent's Inge Corten a native of
Nijmegen, The Netherlands was also honored as the MAC Freshman of the Year.
Kerry DeVries the head coach of Kent took home the MAC Coach of the Year
award.
Northcroft, a repeat winner in the Player of the Year voting, led the
country in scoring this year with 5.25 points per game. She finished the
regular season breaking the NCAA single-season scoring record with 49 goals.
Corten finished the season second in the conference in scoring with 50
points. She led Kent with 18 assists and was tied for the team-lead in
goals with 16.
DeVries led the Kent Golden Flashes to their first regular-season MAC
title since 1993. After losing her top player and last year's Freshman of
the Year, DeVries was still able to share the regular-season title and win
the MAC tournament.
The All-MAC Tournament Team was also announced at the conclusion of
today's championship match won by Kent 7-4 over Ball State.
The Tournament team includes: Janel Spero and Cheryl Eglin of Central
Michigan, Carrie Basile and Kim Wickman of Ohio, Tracy Beck, Kerri Schoultz
and Sally Northcroft of Ball State and Kristen Johnson, Megan Class, Helen
Jerden and Inge Corten of Kent.
