CLEVELAND (Mar. 2) -- The University of Toledo came back from 14-2 deficit and defeated Ball State University 81-65 in the Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinals on March 2 at Public Hall.
After Ball State took the early lead, the third-seeded Rockets (13-14) worked their way back into the game, taking an 18-17 lead on a three-point play by senior Karin Husbeck at the 9:28 mark. The seventh-seeded Cardinals (16-13) then regained the lead at 19-18 before Toledo ended the half with a 22-10 run. Junior forward Kahli Carter scored 13 of her career-high 23 points in the first half to propel the Rockets to a 40-29 halftime lead.
In the second half, it was more of the same as Toledo pushed its lead to as many as 26 at 70-44 with 9:49 remaining. The Rockets shot 54 percent for the game, compared to only 34 percent for Ball State.
Ball State freshman Tamara Bowie scored 21 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and classmate Amy Zercher added 14 points.
Husbeck came off the bench to score 17 for Toledo, while fellow senior Tara Overaitis netted 13.
Toledo advances to the MAC Tournament semifinals for the 12th consecutive season and will face second-seeded Western Michigan (18-10) in the second semifinal game on Friday, March 3, at 9 p.m. The first semifinal will pit top-seeded Kent State University (23-5) against fifth-seeded Eastern Michigan University (16-13) at 7 p.m.
