Eastern Michigan, Buffalo and Akron Student-Athletes Chosen As MAC Football Players of the Week

Cleveland, Ohio (Sept. 25) - Wide receiver Kenny Christian of Eastern Michigan, linebacker Duane Williams of Buffalo and placekicker Zac Derr of Akron captured this week's Mid-American Conference Players of the Week awards for the fourth week of the season.

MAC Offensive Players of the Week
Eastern Michigan wide receiver Kenny Christian (Jr., Arcadia, Fla.)

Christian set a MAC record with 20 receptions in a single game during the Eagles' 49-40 loss at Temple. Christian's total also represents a tie for the fifth highest total in NCAA Division I history. He gained 198 yards on the 20 receptions and added 86 yards on four kickoff returns for 284 all-purpose yards.

Also nominated: Akron QB Butchie Washington (20-32, 258 yards, 0 int. in 23-20 win at Ohio); Buffalo QB Joe Freedy (24-38, 183 yards, 2 TDs in 20-17 win over BGSU); Marshall QB Byron Letfwich (19-35, 215 yards, 1 TD in 20-15 loss at North Carolina); Miami RB Cal Murray (4 Tds in first half, 113 yards, 13 att. in 45-14 win over Kent State); Northern Illinois WR Justin McCareins (11 rec., 189 yards, 1 TD in 31-14 loss at No. 20 Auburn); Toledo RB Chester Taylor (132 yards, 19 att., 1 TD in 21-13 loss at Western Michigan); Western Michigan SE Steve Neal (game-high 8 rec., 75 yards in 21-14 win over Toledo).

MAC Defensive Player of the Week
Buffalo linebacker Duane Williams (Jr., Detroit, Mich.)

Williams helped the Bulls snap an 18-game losing streak with four quarterback sacks for minus 34 yards in a 20-17 win over Bowling Green. Williams had six total tackles with five of those as solos. He also had a forced fumble that put BGSU in a third-and-28 situation with 1:20 remaining and then closed the game out with a sack on fourth down. Williams' four sacks established a school record.

Also nominated: Akron DB Dwight Smith (two fourth quarter interceptions to seal a 23-20 win over Ohio); Marshall DB Doug Hodges (4 tackles and an interception at North Carolina); Miami S Brandon Godsey (9 tackles, 5 solo, returned an int. 56 yards versus Kent State); Northern Illinois FS Buster Sampson (15 tackles, 11 solos, versus No. 20 Auburn); Toledo FS Andy Boyd (team-high 8 tackles, 6 solos); Western Michigan LB Mario Evans (team-high 12 tackles and 1 sack versus Toledo).

MAC Special Teams Player of the Week
Akron placekicker Zac Derr (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.)

Derr booted field goals from 40, 44 and 18 yards, the last being the game-winner in a 23-20 win at Ohio. He added two PATs for 11 points. He moved into 11th place on Akron's all-time scoring list with 142 career points.

Also nominated: Marshall P Curtis Head (8 punts for a 41.3 average, 2 inside the 20 at North Carolina); Toledo FS Paul Dye (blocked punt and ran it in for a touchdown versus Western Michigan); Western Michigan KOR Ronald Rogers (amassed 52 yards on two kickoff returns with a long of 38 versus Toledo).
