Ohio Defeats Western Michigan in MAC Tournament, 77-52

    ATHENS, Ohio (AP) (Mar. 1) -- Sanjay Adell scored 18 points on March 1 to lead Ohio past Western Michigan 77-52 in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament.

    Ohio (19-12), bolstered by 66.7 percent shooting from the field in the second half, dominated near the basket. For the game, the Bobcats outscored the Broncos 50-26 inside.

    On defense, Ohio held Western Michigan (10-18) to 15 points and 20 percent shooting from the field in the first half.

    The Bobcats, who never trailed, scored the game's first eight points. They led 27-4 at the 9:30 point of the first half following a 15-0 run. The Broncos did not reach 10 points until 2:15 remained in the half.

    Ohio continued to build its lead in the second half, opening up a 27-point margin at the 10:48 mark. The Bobcats' lead never fell below 22 the rest of the way.

    Both teams struggled with 3-pointers. Western Michigan was 0-8 in the first half and 4 of 14 for the game. Ohio was 1 of 15 overall.

    The Bobcats had two players in double figures besides Adell. Brandon Hunter scored 17, and Shaun Stonerook had 11, along with a game-high 14 rebounds. That allowed Stonerook to top the 1,000 rebound mark for his career. He now has 1,013.

    The Broncos were led by Jon Powell and Thadus Williams, who scored 10 each.

    Ohio will play Kent (21-6) in the MAC quarterfinals Sunday at Gund Arena in Cleveland.
