CLEVELAND, Ohio (Oct. 19) Ohio's Heather Fueger (women's golf) and Western
Michigan's Scott Niles (football) were named the MAC Scholar Athletes of
the Week on October 19, 1999.
Fueger (Sr., 3.48, recreation management, West Lafayette, Ind.) won the
Lady Colonel Classic by three strokes, shooting a 153. She shot a 77 in
the first round and a 76 in the second round. Ohio finished third of 12
teams in the tournament. It marked the second time this season that
Fueger earned individual medalist honors. She has finished in the top 10
in four of the five fall tournaments and led Ohio to no worse than fifth
in all five fall events, including two team titles .
Niles (Sr., 3.61, marketing, Brighton, Mich.) led WMU in tackles for the
second straight week, compiling 15 tackles (seven solos) along with a
sack in WMU's 45-17 victory over Buffalo.
The honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has
a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well
during that week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the
conference's faculty athletic representatives.

Akron: Michelle Rizzo (women's cross country, So., 3.25, business,
Painesville, Ohio) finished fifth overall at the Wolverine Interregional
in Ann Arbor, Mich. She has been the top Zip finisher at each meet this
season and has been a catalyst for the team's turnaround. Jon Eaton
(football, Sr., 3.07, biology, Wheelersburg, Ohio) returned a kickoff 42
yards for a touchdown in the Zips' 55-25 win over Bowling Green. He
punted four times for 171 yards and a 42.8 average. Eaton finished the
game with four tackles (three unassisted) and had two pass break ups.
Ball State: Emily Sallee (volleyball, Jr., 3.71, elementary education,
Muncie, Ind.) totaled 37 assists and had nine digs in a three-game win
over Miami on Wednesday, Oct. 13, handing the RedHawks their first MAC
loss of the season. On Saturday, she became the first Cardinal to ever
record 1,000 assists each of her first three seasons in BSU's 15-5,
15-5, 15-12 win over Ohio. Sallee quarterbacked the Ball State offense
and totaled 35 assists, improving her season total to 1,030. Sallee
leads the conference in assists per game this season with an average of
3.71.
Bowling Green: Melissa Lewis (volleyball, Sr., 3.12, human movement
science, Mansfield, Ohio) helped the Falcons extend their winning streak
to five matches with three-game sweeps over Toledo and Central
Michigan. She averaged 4.83 kills and 3.50 digs per game and had a
hitting percentage of .387 on the weekend, with 29 kills and just five
errors in 62 total attempts. Lewis hit .370 (12-2-27) against Toledo
and .400 (17-3-35) against CMU. She has led the Falcons in kills in 16
of this season's 19 matches. She currently ranks second in the MAC in
kills per game with 4.58. Jason Bryant (men's soccer, Sr., 3.09,
environmental policy and analysis, Pickerington, Ohio) scored the first
goal of BGSU's double-overtime win at Marshall. He played strong
defensively as the Falcons allowed just two goals in 219.40 minutes of
play over the weekend.
Buffalo: Tara Donahue (women's soccer, Sr., 3.60, education, Port Crane,
N.Y.) led the Bulls to two road wins over the weekend, including a 2-1
victory at regular-season defending champion Ohio. Buffalo is now
13-1-1 on the season, 7-1 in MAC play. Donahue is a midfielder who
controls the pace of the game. A team captain, she has played in all 15
games this season. Sam Burroughs (men's cross country, Sr., 3.01,
exercise science, Melrose, N.Y.) placed fourth (27:21.2) in Buffalo's
final home meet of the season as Buffalo defeated Western Ontario,
19-42.
Eastern Michigan: Domtilla Mwei (women's cross country, So., 3.03,
computer science, Lesos) continued the best individual season in the
school's history, winning her fifth event in six outings and pacing the
Eagles to the Central Collegiates Invitational team title by
outdistancing the second-place finisher from Ball State by 24 seconds in
a time of 18:17. Blake McDowell (men's cross country, So., 3.58,
accounting, Reynoldsburg, Ohio) has led the Eagles in every event this
season, pacing the team once again with his second individual title in
as many weeks in a time of 25:33, 11 seconds ahead of the second-place
finisher. He has placed in the top 10 in five events this year.
Kent: Carrie McEnery (volleyball, Jr., 3.19, elementary education,
Orland Park, Ill.) picked up a career and match-high 28 digs to help
lead the Flashes to a five-game victory over Miami. She also added 26
kills, two blocks and two key aces in the win and hit only nine errors.
Gary McCullough (football, Sr., 3.29, elementary education, McMurray,
Pa.) recorded six tackles, including three solos, in a 17-10 loss to
Miami. Kent's defensive totals of 17 points and 248 yards allowed were
the fewest since the 1996 season.
Ohio: Tom Weilbacher (football, So., 3.15, education, Columbus, Ohio)
tallied 10 tackles at Eastern Michigan, including five first hits. He
had a tackle for a loss of four yards and recovered an EMU fumble at the
Ohio one-yard line, keeping the Eagles out of the endzone. Weilbacher
has picked up no less than six tackles in each of Ohio's seven games.
He ranks second on the team in tackles with 57 and leads Ohio with seven
TFL (19 yards) and three fumbles recovered.
Toledo: Stephanie Young (women's golf, So., 3.189, business management,
Paulding, Ohio) finished 30th out of 60 golfers with a 238 at the South
Florida Tournament. Dave Marhefka (men's cross country, Sr., 3.090,
mathematics, Weslake, Ohio) finished 10th out of 68 runners at the
Central Collegiate Championships in Ypsilanti.
Western Michigan: Traci Morin (volleyball, Sr., 3.17, physical
education, Bay City, Mich.) helped WMU maintain a perfect MAC record
(8-0) and its eight straight win by hitting .475 (22-3-40) in the
Broncos' wins over Central Michigan and Buffalo. Morin upped her attack
percentage to .409 on the season and totaled five blocks and 10 digs in
the two matches.
