AKRON, Ohio (September 16, 2000) -- AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Butchie Washington threw two touchdown passes, Tony McCray ran for two scores and cornerback Dwight Smith had a key blocked
field goal in the fourth quarter as Akron beat Central Florida 35-24 on Sept. 16th.
McCray scored on an 11-yard run and Washington threw scoring passes of 7 and 48 yards to Lavel Bailey in the first half as the Zips (1-2) took a 28-14 halftime
McCray, who carried just five times for 25 yards, put Akron ahead 35-14 with 5:36 remaining in the third quarter.
Central Florida's Vic Penn cut the lead to 11 with a 61-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Fryzel with 8:58 to go. The Golden Knights (1-2) had a chance to pull
within eight at the 3:05 mark, but Smith blocked Javier Beorlegui's 35-yard field goal attempt.
Penn completed 25-of-41 passes for 306 yards but was intercepted four times, three of them by Smith. Fryzel caught five passes for 109 yards.
Brandon Payne had 138 yards rushing on 25 carries for Akron. Jimmie Gray ran for a career-best 111 yards in 16 attempts and Lavel Bailey had six catches for 131 yards.
